Low Cost Surveillance Systems

There are two different kinds of video surveillance systems. Analog and Digital.

Digital are IP based systems where every device is assigned an IP address and sends it signal over a standard cat5e network plug usually through a Power Over Ethernet (POE) switch. Some NVRs will include a 4 or 8 port POE switch with it. If not, there are many manufacturers with small 4 or 8 port POE switches to choose from.

Analog are based on Coax cables and receive their power over a separate small cord that has a 12v power on it. The analog cameras are typically much cheaper ($30) than their IP competitors ($100). But many manufacturers are competing very well by getting their IP cameras to just over$50/camera.

Here are some options for video surveillance.

Low cost NVRs based on IP cameras:

Analog systems

A very nice complete package with 4 cameras and 1TB hard drive is available from Swann. There are several reviewers though who experienced complete failure of all cameras over a 4 month duration.

Digital Systems

I prefer both Amcrest and Reolink for inexpensive bullet and turret IP cameras. Sunba makes some very fine high performance cameras and those with a 36x zoom can record crystal clear video on objects 1,000 ft away. If you just need a home security system, 4 camera systems are a bit more than the analog but offer great flexibility for the future and some support wifi capabilities for ease of installation.

Check out the recent offerings from the Reolink Amazon page. They have a sale on for a 4 camera system at $339.99.

Surveillance and Integrated NAS

If a NAS is in your future, you may want to consider the Synology DVA1622.

  1. So with basics I’m understanding we’re talking about a Four camera system and I’m cool with that. I also like that they offer greater flexibility. Like the WiFi capabilities. I think I would like that. I would like to go with your recommendation and experience expertise. I have to give you some of my down falls, budgeting I really fill we can work with. I’m hoping for some that’s wireless?
    Thanks David

    1. Your welcome Cesar. Besides cameras if you wanted to expand to a full home security system, the Resideo (previously Honeywell Home) TotalConnect 2.0 platform is being used by a lot of people. With that type of system it includes cameras, thermostats, sirens, motion sensors, and door contacts for intrusion alert and 24×7 monitoring by a professional monitoring service. Here’s a website for a complete description, https://www.honeywellhome.com/us/en/products/security/security-systems/proa7-proseries-7-inch-all-in-one-panel-honeywell-home-proa7/
